ITRA distance categories are based on typical and popular distances of trail races. They range from 2 km (Vertical) to distances over 190 km or 100 miles (Endurance).

In reality, the exact distance of a trail race usually differs from the distance categories listed. A sufficiently large distance tolerance range is used for each race category. In this way, a race result always falls into a category.
